In North Adams the two branches of the Hoosic meet downtown and run west together, and the whole city tips toward that seam. Green Fields/Josh Field Landscaping works the year on both slopes of it — mowing, trimming, edging and mulch while the hills are green, cleanups at either end, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the valley fills with white and Greylock disappears into cloud. Winter arrives early up here and leaves late, so the two halves of the job nearly touch in the middle. A lawn cut clean in July and a driveway opened before work in January come out of the same habit of attention. It is good work to do in a city built at the bottom of mountains.
