There is a route up West Newton Hill that Brother's Landscaping knows in both of its weathers. In July it means mowers, edged bed lines and trimmed borders along the long front lawns above Washington Street; in January it means a blade at the top of those same driveways before the commuter traffic ever reaches the highway. Spring and autumn bring the clearing work, leaves off the grass and beds emptied, the yard handed back to itself. Winter runs on its own clock: driveways opened, entry paths cleared, salt on the shaded turns. The pleasure of it is continuity, the same yards kept whatever the sky is doing.
