Up on the high ground toward Turkey Hill, with the Artichoke water lying still and cold below, you can watch a storm cross the North Shore a good while before it reaches downtown. North Shore Land Design is usually out in it by then, plowing driveways and lots, opening walkways, getting ahead of the accumulation rather than chasing it. Ice control goes on the pitched drives and the shaded aprons where a thaw would only make things worse by morning. Snow gets pushed to where it belongs — clear of sightlines, clear of the mailbox, clear of the door. Moonlight on a driveway freshly cleared to the pavement is a decent reward for a night's work.
