Out along Polpis Road the island opens into moor — bayberry, low huckleberry, ponds flashing between the rises, Sankaty's light turning far off. Neil Paterson Landscaping mows and keeps the properties out this way, and when a nor'easter comes across, plows the long drives back open. Wind is the constant partner here: it shapes the scrub, it drifts the snow, it decides how a cleanup goes. There is real pleasure in stepping back from a lawn that ends cleanly right where the moor begins. By October the whole rise turns rust and gold, and the work goes on beneath it.
