Mid-island wakes first: trucks on Sparks Avenue, headlights at the Fairgrounds end, the working half of Nantucket already in gear by five. J & M Landscape Services keeps lawns cut, trimmed and edged through the season, and turns to plowing and shoveling when the weather changes sides. These are dense little yards with fences and hedges drawn tight around them, and every one wants a slightly different line. In a storm the job is measured in doorways opened and cars able to leave — grit on the ice, walks scraped down to concrete. A neighborhood that gets to work on time is its own kind of result.
