Mid-island wakes before the town does — trucks out on Old South Road, fog still lying in the hollows, the day not yet decided. Dyna Mow Lawn Services cuts and trims those yards through the season and, come winter, clears driveways and walks when a storm crosses the sound. Grass grows differently in sand and salt air, and it takes attention to keep it thick and even from Surfside up toward the airport road. A lawn edged tight against a shell driveway is a small, satisfying kind of order. Then February piles snow against the doors, and the same trucks come back and carry it off.
