Bramanville's streets were laid out around a mill, which means they run narrow, close-shouldered and unforgiving of a careless plow. Little Diggers Construction knows those Millbury blocks in the dark — where the hydrants hide, where a bank can be stacked without burying a neighbor's mailbox. Four in the morning is the usual hour: diesel warming, streetlight snow coming down slantwise, the first drive opened while the house sleeps on. Walks and steps are cleared, sand goes on the pitch, and the piles land where they will not melt back across an entrance. Small streets, done carefully, one after another until daylight.
