By late June the light in Middleton hangs on past eight o'clock, and the yards that slope down toward Boston Brook hold the last of it in the grass. That is Guarino Landscape Inc's favorite hour — mower shut off, the smell of cut lawn still hanging in the warm air, a clean line of shadow crossing a yard that was shaggy at noon and is not anymore. The work is mowing, trimming and edging, plus the cleanups that bookend a summer up here: raking out whatever winter left behind in April, then carrying off the leaves in November. A lawn kept this way reads like a made bed — nothing dramatic, just everything in its place. In a town the size of Middleton the results sit side by side down the same street, which is a fair enough way to be judged.
