Early May mornings come up off Middleton Pond in a low white mist that burns away by eight, and the lawns above it are green weeks before anybody has thought to look. Earp Landscaping is out in that first hour. The season opens with the winter debris raked clear and carted off, then the first careful mow while the soil is still holding meltwater, then a weekly cut that keeps the grass from ever getting away. The trimmer squares up stone walls, post bases and the borders of beds; the edge along the drive is cut clean enough that the lawn looks drawn rather than grown. By November the leaves are gone and the ground is put away tidy for the cold.
