Johns Pond keeps its stillness longest just before sunrise, when the rest of Mashpee is still deciding whether to wake. Ball Landscaping works both ends of that day and both ends of the year: mowing, edging and trimming through the growing months, plowing and clearing through the cold ones. Cape soil is mostly sand under a thin green skin, so a lawn here earns its color — and there is real pride in one that ends in a deliberate line at the walk. In February the reward changes shape and is just as good, a driveway open and passable before the first car needs it. Two kinds of work, one yard, and nothing left half-done.
