At three in the morning the Lynnway is nothing but wind off Nahant Bay and the orange sweep of a plow light. Cesar's Snow Removal is out in it, pushing back the drifts a coastal storm packs against the curb and shoveling walks where wet snow has set like mortar. There is a plain pride in coming down a street ahead of the first commuter, in a driveway opened wide and salted to the pavement while everyone inside is still asleep. Storms here arrive heavy off the water and freeze hard by morning, so timing is most of the job. When the sky finally goes gray, the work is behind them and the city can move.
