Snow falling on Hudson's brick mills makes the whole downtown go soft and quiet while the Assabet keeps running black underneath it. Costar works those hours — plowing lots and driveways, clearing walkways by hand, and spreading salt and sand wherever a shaded corner has turned to glass. The streets here bend and narrow around the old river works, and clearing them well means knowing which way the drifts build on each one. By the time the first shift is moving on Main Street, the pavement is open. That is the whole of the job, and it is a good one to have.
