On a July evening the light lies long across the Hubbardston common, and the mowed stripes on the lawns along Main Street go gold and then blue. Grasshopper Yard Grooming keeps those yards on a steady week: cutting at an even height, trimming close around stone walls and old maples, edging the walks so the line reads clean from the road. Up on the hill roads grass grows in fits, thin beneath the oaks and thick where the field opens, and much of the work is simply reading it right. Spring cleanups pull the winter out of the beds; autumn means leaves, and then more leaves, gathered and hauled off ahead of the first hard frost. It is ordinary, weekly, satisfying work, and a well-kept yard in a hilltown says something good without saying anything at all.
