October around the Whiting Street Reservoir turns the oaks a deep rust, and every gust off the water sends another load of leaves down onto the lawns below. G & H Landscaping, Inc. spends that month raking, blowing and hauling, closing out a season that opened with the first cut in April — mowing, edging, trimming and mulch in between. By December the trucks change over to plows: driveways and lots opened, walkways cleared by hand, salt and sand where ice sets in overnight. A yard put to bed cleanly in the fall is an easier yard to plow in January, so the two halves of the year answer each other. That is the shape of the work in Holyoke.
