Holyoke's canals run in three tiers below the mill windows, and in January the water at the gates goes glassy and slow. AgawamEvergreen works the winter side of the Paper City — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks down to the pavement, and putting down salt and sand where the brick streets take on a shine. A storm can come up the valley all night and leave the whole grid buried by six in the morning. The reward is the sound a shovel makes when it finally scrapes bare stone, and a lot opened wide before the first car turns in. Snow is the whole job in a Holyoke winter, and it gets done one address at a time.
