The East Branch of the Housatonic begins in these hills, gathering out of wet meadows and running cold past Hinsdale long before anyone downstream calls it a river. Quail's Landscaping works the ground it drains — mowing and trimming through the warm stretch, borders kept, and long October cleanups when the maples up toward Wahconah Falls, just over the Dalton line, finally turn loose. Then the calendar flips and those same properties want plowing, with walks shoveled and traction down before the first drive over the ridge. Hinsdale collects more snow than the valley towns and collects it sooner, so the blades are hung while leaves are still falling. Two halves of a year, one habit: the ground left the way you would want to find it.
