Hadley is open farm country under the shoulder of the Mount Holyoke Range, and in winter that openness is everything. Wind sweeps the bare asparagus fields and the Connecticut River floodplain, lifting snow off acres of furrows and laying it back down in long drifts across driveways and farm lanes. Yellow Ribbon Trucking takes on that snow, cutting through the drifts so homes along the long town common and out on the field roads can reach Route 9 again. The look of a Hadley drive after the plow — a dark ribbon cut through white fields — is about as good as winter gets. High on the range, the old Summit House at Skinner State Park looks down as the valley digs out.
