By mid-July the fields along Route 23 toward Egremont have gone gold at the edges, and the heat sits in the valley until evening. Stanton's Service's mows straight through it, keeping Great Barrington lawns cut, trimmed and edged on a rhythm the grass itself sets. A summer here can swing from a wet stretch that has everything growing an inch a week to a dry August that asks for a higher blade, and the work reads which one it is. Spring and fall cleanups bookend the season, one clearing what winter left behind, the other clearing what the trees send down. There is real pleasure in the last pass of the day, when the yard is striped and the mower goes quiet.
