Batchelor Brook runs black between white banks in January, and the hayfields on either side hold the snow flat and unbroken until the wind gets at it. Lempke Construction plows and clears through Granby — long farm driveways, dooryards, walkways shoveled down to the door, sand and salt wherever ice sets up. Out here a drive can run three hundred feet from the road, and drifting is as much of a problem as accumulation. A clean dark track cut across all that white before the sun is properly up is a good thing to look back at. Cold mornings, hot coffee, finished before the school buses run.
