Ravenswood's hemlocks keep their dark all year while the maples along Western Avenue go up like a struck match in October. Cape Ann Landscape works the Magnolia end of Gloucester and beyond — mowing, string-trimming, edging beds, mulching, and the long fall cleanups that follow a wind off the water. On the ocean side a lawn takes salt spray in November and still has to look like a lawn in May, which shapes how it gets fed and how it gets cut. There is a particular pleasure in the final mow of the year: lines sharp, beds turned, the yard put away tidy for the cold. Then spring comes and they start the whole green argument over.
