In Gill the Connecticut River makes the weather personal: fog lifts off Barton Cove, freezes onto everything it touches, and the fields toward the French King Bridge go white to the treeline overnight. Renaissance Excavating works those miles of farm road and long rural driveway, plowing down to gravel, opening turnarounds, pushing banks back where a truck has to swing wide. Walkways and steps get shoveled and sanded, and the drifts that build along open fields get taken down before the next wind rebuilds them. Traffic on Route 2 never notices any of it, which is exactly the point. What's left at first light is a place you can simply drive out of, with the river running dark below.
