Franklin holds a bookish distinction: Benjamin Franklin answered the town's choice of his name with a gift of books, and those volumes became what is counted as the nation's first public library. Maione Landscapes brings a different kind of order to the town, keeping lawns mowed, edged and trimmed on the streets around the Town Common and in the neighborhoods spreading out from it. Late spring is when Franklin grass surges, pushed by warm rain and long light, and keeping pace is half the art. The other half is detail — a sharp border at the walk, clippings blown off the driveway, so a finished yard reads like a well-kept page. On a June evening near the common, the town smells of cut grass and lilac.
