From the ramparts at Fort Phoenix you can see the whole shape of a Fairhaven winter: the hurricane barrier standing dark across the harbor mouth, New Bedford's lights strung along the far bank, snow coming up the Acushnet on a northeast wind. Fairhaven Excavation runs plows through it — driveways and parking areas pushed back to the pavement, entries and walks cleared, sand and salt where the grade tips toward the water. Wet ocean snow is heavy work and it does not wait for daylight. By morning the lots are open and the ordinary business of the day starts on time. That is the measure of a night well spent.
