Out on the Katama plain the wind comes straight off South Beach with nothing to break it, and it shapes everything that grows there. Marthas Vineyard Irrigation mows and trims through the long green months, edging beds and paths so a yard holds its shape against all that salt air, then turns to plowing and shoveling when a squall crosses the Sound and leaves Edgartown white down to the waterline. Sand follows, on the slick spots near doorways and gates. There is a quiet pleasure in a lawn striped clean in August and the same driveway scraped bare in January. Same ground, same hands, two different kinds of good morning.
