Fog slides in off Duxbury Bay before sunup and burns away slow, and the mowers are already working the pine-shaded streets by the time the light turns hard and bright. Johnny Appleseed Tree & Landscape gives South Shore yards their weekly cut, then everything else a place asks for: brush mowing, brush removal and chipping, vegetation management, stump grinding, mulch laid dark around the beds, aeration and dethatching, shrubs and bushes trimmed back to shape. There is Bobcat work for the heavy jobs, new lawn installations where there was only scrub, and spring and fall cleanups raked down to clean open ground. When the wind swings around and snow comes sideways off the water, the same trucks are out clearing drives while the marsh is still blue-dark. Sandy soil and salt air are hard on grass out here — holding the crisp edge, keeping the way open, letting a yard carry its season — that is the whole satisfaction of the work.
