About JCS MAINTENANCE INC

Winter arrives in Douglas from the southwest, over Wallum Lake and the dark hemlocks of the state forest, and by the time it reaches Route 16 the road is already going white. JCS Maintenance Inc works those hours — the long middle of the night, when a plow light is the only thing moving on a back road. There is a particular satisfaction in a driveway opened all the way down to pavement, the apron squared off, salt laid where the shade keeps ice honest. Douglas is a town of long drives and steep dooryards, and every one of them wants a slightly different pass. The payoff comes at seven in the morning, when a car backs out without a second thought and the day simply starts.
