Douglas State Forest holds a cedar swamp so still that a July afternoon in it sounds like nothing at all, and the town around it keeps some of that hush. Douglas lawn and landscaping mows the yards cut out of those woods, where lawns share a border with pine shade and fieldstone wall. Weekly cutting, trimming and edging make up the routine that keeps a clearing from quietly going back to forest. Spring cleanup gathers the branches winter dropped; the fall round takes the needles and leaves. A tidy lawn out here, trees standing back from it, looks like a small and deliberate victory.
