Out past Russells Mills the stone walls run off into the hayfields and the Slocum River goes quiet and brown between its banks. J. Liborio Landscape Design works these inland corners of Dartmouth, where a lawn has to hold its own against sandy ground and a wind that carries salt this far up from the water. Late in the day, when the light turns gold across the mown rows, you can see every pass the mower made and every border trimmed back to a line. The year opens with the rake and the first cut and closes with the leaves gathered off the grass before frost sets them down for good. It is ordinary work done carefully, and it shows from the road.
