Fog slides up off Buzzards Bay in the early hours and lies over Dartmouth's stone walls and hayfields until the southwest wind carries it off — and by then the mowers are already out, cutting clean lines into grass still beaded with salt damp. DeTerra's Landscape Design works this stretch of the South Coast the way the land asks to be worked: mowing and edging, spring and fall cleanups, mulch and weed block laid dark around flower beds and raised beds, shrubs and trees pruned or planted, new lawns started from sod or seed. The hardscape work is what stays — retaining walls set into a slope, stone paths, cobblestone edging that holds a bed's shape long after the leaves come down. Irrigation goes in, gets repaired, gets winterized ahead of the first hard freeze, and then the plows take their turn, driveways and lots opened and treated for ice while the harbor at Padanaram is still dark. Across southeastern Massachusetts and into Bristol County, Rhode Island, the reward is the same each time: a yard that looks tended, and holds it.
