The back roads out toward Estabrook Woods lose their edges the minute a storm gets going — stone walls under a foot of white, no shoulder, and no light but the truck's. Luke's Plowing runs them through the night, opening driveways, clearing turnarounds, shoveling walks and steps, and sanding the shaded pitches the sun never quite reaches. Concord's older drives bend and narrow under the pines, so plowing them is a matter of knowing where the lawn starts before you can see it. The good part of the shift comes near sunrise, with the last drive scraped down and the woods gone perfectly still. Then the cleanup rounds begin again, because the wind always fills something back in.
