There is a week in late October when Chatham changes hands — the summer gardens gone leggy, the wind swinging around out of the northeast — and the work turns with it, from mowing and edging to hauling the fall clean-up out from under the hedges and blowing the drives clear. Nickerson Tree & Landscape keeps that turning going all the way around the calendar: irrigation winterized before the first hard freeze and started up again when the ground softens, mulch laid dark against new annuals and perennials, hedges pruned back into their shapes, trees thinned so the light falls where it should. Come winter the same driveways and walkways are plowed and cleared, the sandy lower-Cape lanes of Chatham, Harwich, Brewster, and Orleans opened up before the day begins. When the fog finally lifts off the flats, the results are plain to read — a crisp edge holding a bed line, a patio and retaining wall set true, a lawn aerated and fed and green right up to where the salt air takes over. That is the quiet pleasure of this trade: a yard that carries its season well, because somebody put the hours in first.
