A walkway sets overnight, and by morning the edge is true — one clean line running from the step to the driveway, the kind of line that will still read straight after a dozen frosts have come and gone. That is the work here: poured patios and slabs, garage and interior floors, stamped surfaces, driveways and foundations, and masonry laid up in fieldstone and brick, retaining walls and steps that settle into Charlton's hill country as though the ledge had always meant to hold them. The same hands take down trees and clear land, opening a stand of oak back to daylight, and push snow off drives and lots when winter closes over the ridges. Charlton is stone-wall country — orchard rows on the rise, granite waiting just under the topsoil, Route 20 running east through second-growth woods toward Worcester.
