Mill Brook runs under the Bissell Covered Bridge and out toward the Deerfield, and the flat green places between Charlemont's hills are the ones people keep as lawn. Paul Hazard's Gutters mows and trims those yards through the short northern summer, when grass grows hard from June into September and then thinks better of it. Working around ledge, old apple trees and fence posts is most of the art up here; the mowing itself is the easy half. Autumn brings the cleanup, and in this valley that means real leaves — maple color coming off the hillsides all at once. Spring brings the other one: the yard cleared, cut, and set up for another go around.
