Snow falls quiet over Mill Pond, and by midnight Burlington's side streets have gone soft and blue. P J's Landscaping is out in it, plowing driveways, shoveling walks, steps and the path to the door, and putting down salt or sand where the melt will refreeze. The town's slopes are gentle but persistent, and a driveway pitched toward the street wants treating, not only clearing. Long storms mean coming back around again and again so nothing has a chance to set up hard. By the time the main roads are finished, the driveways are already open.
