Dooryards along Burlington's older lanes still keep their fieldstone walls, low and lichened, running off into stands of oak and white pine that were pasture once. Winter arrives here in the small hours, filling those walls to the cap and laying a smooth grey weight over every drive between Cambridge Street and the Middlesex Turnpike. This is snow work: plowing driveways open, cutting walkways and entries back to bare pavement, clearing a property before the town has finished waking. There is a plain pleasure in the finished line — the shoulder banked clean, the path squared at the door, a house free to go about its morning. Burlington and the towns around it come back one driveway at a time.
