At the bottom of the hill the Deerfield River runs past Shelburne Falls, over the glacial potholes and under the Bridge of Flowers, and Buckland climbs away from it in every direction. Frank LaBelle's Sales & Service keeps lawns cut and kept along those grades — mowing, trimming, edging, and the seasonal cleanups a yard full of maples insists on. Mowing a hillside is a different craft than mowing a flat lot; the machine has opinions and the ground has more. By midsummer, when the valley fills in green and the road up toward Buckland Center becomes a tunnel of leaves, the yards along it look level and neat. A small satisfaction, steadily repeated.
