In Brewster the bay slides out a mile at low tide and comes back carrying salt, and everything the salt touches keeps a record of it — shingled walls going silver, decks greening in the shade of pitch pine and scrub oak, gutters streaked from a winter of damp. Outside Cleaners LLC washes the outside of buildings across the mid-Cape, with cedar as their particular study: shingle and clapboard siding, cedar fencing, roofs in asphalt and cedar alike. They work through mahogany, ipe, and pressure-treated decks and the composites too — Azek, Trex, Fiberon, Dura-Life — and under the decks where nobody looks, then on to concrete, brick, and stone, rust stains, house trim, tennis and pickleball courts, gutters cleaned and whitened, walls prepped for a muralist's first line. The reward is the moment the mold and algae let go and the grain comes back up out of the gray, a house looking again like the one somebody built. It is honest, weather-answering work, and in the cold months the same crews turn to clearing snow.
