Late October in Boylston is a hinge: one week the crews are hauling the last leaves off commercial lawns above the Wachusett Reservoir, and the next the plow gear is back on the trucks, waiting for the first weather to slide down off the Wachusett hills. LEI Corporation works both halves of that year on commercial properties across New England — landscape maintenance and seasonal landscape development, enhancements, hardscape and site improvements while the ground is soft; snow and ice management and parking lot work once the pavement goes hard and blue. There is a real satisfaction in a lot cleared and de-iced before the first car turns in at dawn, in a bed edged so sharply the mulch line still holds its shape in August. From Boylston and Worcester the trucks roll out early, and the places they leave behind look like somebody meant them.
