There comes a morning in Beverly when the salt wind off Massachusetts Bay finally loses its bite and the lawns along Ryal Side begin to green — and that is when the mowers roll out, drawing clean lines up the yards of the old Garden City. Through the warm months the work is grass and edges and the slow tidy of a place: walks trimmed sharp, spring's tangle raked away, and the leaves that drift down over Cabot Street each October gathered up so a yard keeps its shape from Dane Street Beach to the rocky shoulders of Prides Crossing. Then the wind swings around, the first nor'easter piles against the driveways, and the labor turns with the weather — plow blades down before the harbor lightens, snow cut back to bare pavement so a morning can simply begin. It is work you can read on the land: a crisp border, a cleared drive, a yard along the North Shore that looks tended in every light the bay throws at it.
