Winter comes down the Connecticut Valley into Bernardston with the wind out ahead of it, and by the time it crosses Huckle Hill the roads have already gone white. L & D Builders plows through that, opening driveways, lots and private lanes, clearing walkways, and putting down sand and salt wherever the grade turns slick. This close to the Vermont line the storms run long and the cold sits, so a drive gets a pass during and another after, with the banks pushed back to make room for the next one. Nothing about it is complicated and nothing about it is small either: somebody makes it down to Route 10 on time, a truck gets up a hill it had no business climbing. By the time the valley goes pale with first light, the last pass is cut and the town is moving.
