D&D Mulch and Landscape works the low, wooded ground of Bellingham, where the upper Charles slips past old mill villages and stone walls run off into second-growth pine. The bark mulch is made right on the property — twelve kinds of it — stacked beside crushed stone, sand, screened loam and seasoned firewood, waiting on a truck. It goes down by hand, bed by bed, with the weeding and edging done first, so a yard comes back looking like somebody knelt in it; the masonry side sets stone walls, walkways, patios, front steps and retaining walls that look as though the ground offered them up. There is the whole arc of a landscape here too — design, installation, lawns and plantings, drainage that sends water where it ought to go, and maintenance carried through the commercial year. Then the cold turns the work over: plowing, sanding and salting, aisles cut clean and a lot lying open and gray before the first car of the morning.
