Out of Hyannis it travels all fifteen Cape towns — Barnstable to Provincetown, Falmouth to Bourne — patios and retaining walls and steps, landscape design and native plantings that take gladly to sandy soil and salt air, irrigation zones set in spring and drained before the cold, low-voltage lighting that makes a yard glow once the sun drops behind the pitch pines. Water features run their small rivers all summer; lawn care keeps the edges crisp; and when the northeast wind stacks snow against a shingled house, the drive is opened again before morning. There is carpentry too, and kitchen and bath work indoors when the ground is hard. It is good work to stand back from — a wall holding its line, a walkway that leads somewhere, a property that keeps its shape through every turn of Cape weather.
