Ayer's light comes in low and long over the Nashoba Valley, catching the brick of the old depot blocks and the pond water out past Grove and Sandy, and the work here answers whatever that light is doing — long mowing afternoons in June, the rake-and-haul of October, the blue-black hours before a storm lets up. Sidney Landscaping Services Inc keeps residential and commercial grounds through it all: mowing and weed whacking, edging landscape beds and laying mulch, weeding and pruning, spring and fall cleanups, plus plant, sod, and grass installation and repair. They also build in stone and stay in the ground — retaining, block, and stone walls, patios, walkways, stairs and steps, fireplaces and firepits, veneer work; and excavation with drainage installation and repair, line trenching, catch basins, ground leveling, lawn installation, and demolition. For commercial properties in winter, the loader, bobcat, and triaxle go out for plowing, shoveling, salt and sand, de-icing, and hauling snow off the lot entirely. What's left behind is the plain pleasure of the trade: a bed edged clean as a pen line, water going where it should, a parking lot black and open at first light.
