A stone walk set true — each piece bedded so the seams run clean and nothing shifts underfoot — is the kind of result DH Horticulture likes to leave behind. The work goes out from Ayer, where old rail lines cut through the Nashoba Valley and the land rolls up into low drumlins, and carries into Concord and the towns around it: lawn care, gardening, tree work, irrigation, and hardscaping. There is a plain pleasure in a bed mulched dark around fresh plantings, in a limb taken down so the light falls where it ought to, in sprinkler heads throwing a fine mist across grass while the valley air is still cool. The year here is unforgiving and generous by turns — March mud, then June's deep green, then the long amber that comes over the orchard hills in October — and a yard kept with attention holds every bit of it.
