Fog comes off the Millers River early and lies along the low streets of Athol until the sun gets over the hills. Kendall's Yard Care is out in it, mowing, trimming, edging, and hauling the clippings off before the day turns hot. When the year flips, those same routes get run with a plow, driveways opened and walks shoveled down to the step. Mill-town lots are odd shapes, tucked between foundations and fences, and getting them cut clean takes some patience. It is honest work either way, and a finished yard on a river morning looks like something worth stopping to see.
