The Mid-State Trail slips through Ashburnham along the ridges, past cellar holes and stone walls that were somebody's field two centuries back. October is the long push — oak and maple coming down all at once, hauled away before rain fixes them in place. April runs the other direction: beds opened, winter debris cleared, a first cut that sets the shape of the whole season. Grass kept even right up against an old wall is a fine-looking piece of work.
