Andover sits on ridges the ice age left behind — Indian Ridge running its long gravel spine through the west side, driveways tipping off it at angles that matter a great deal in February. Earth Works plows and clears through winter here, working driveways, walkways and lots from the first sticking inch to the last gray drift of March. On a slope the job gets done properly or not at all: down to the pavement, the turnaround widened, sand on the pitch where the sun never reaches. Nor'easters climb in over the hill and drop the wet, heavy kind that bends everything, and the only answer is to go back out. There is real pride in a street full of houses that can all get where they are going.
