About Whirlwind Fine Garden Design

A stone wall rises one fitted piece at a time, and when the last cap settles in it looks as though the ground grew it — that steady, hand-set result is what this Amherst design-build landscape company works toward. They draw the plan and then build it: patios, walkways and steps, fire pits and outdoor kitchens, water features, fences and pergolas, raised beds, plantings and lawns — and they come back through the growing season to mow and string trim, dethatch and aerate, fertilize, weed, prune, mulch, and clear the beds in spring and again in fall. The Pioneer Valley gives them plenty to answer to: the Holyoke Range shouldering up south of town, flat river farmland running west toward the Connecticut, October light coming in sideways through the maples. Their trucks range across Western Massachusetts — Hadley and Northampton, Leverett, Shutesbury and Pelham, Belchertown and Granby, Deerfield, Whately and Greenfield. A place they've finished keeps its shape: edges crisp, stonework true, plantings knitting deeper into the valley soil year after year.
