West Street runs south out of Amherst past dooryards edged in old fieldstone, gaps of hayfield, and the long blue shoulder of the Holyoke Range standing over all of it. Taylor Davis Co. works that ground — a landscaping and construction operation laying residential paving and driveways, taking on commercial, municipal, state and federal builds, shaping the planted edges of a property, then coming back in January to open those same drives before the valley is awake. There is a plain pleasure in a fresh apron of asphalt cooling dark against green lawn, in a mowing line drawn straight across a Pioneer Valley yard, in a plow's clean cut down to gravel while the maples stand loaded white. Season after season the work leaves behind something you can walk on: a place that keeps its shape through mud, heat, leaf-fall, and snow.
