Morning arrives late in Adams — the sun has to climb the Hoosac Range before it reaches the valley floor, and by then the mowers are already off the trailer. This is lawn care in the lee of Greylock, where the ground tilts on both sides of the Hoosic and nearly every yard is cut on a grade of some kind: mowing and edging, hedge trimming, weed control, yard clearance and the tidying of garden beds across Adams and the surrounding Berkshire towns. There is a particular satisfaction in the final pass, when the stripes run true past brick mill walls and the hedgerows along the rail trail, and a lawn that was shaggy at eight o'clock is holding its shape by noon. The work asks for patience on the slope and gives back something you can read from the road.
